Cryogenix is a place for old computers, unusual operating systems, open networks, free software, and the parts of the Internet that are still worth preserving - either for their own sake or because people are tired of the 'new' Internet. If you haven't already, I invite you to read about our history.

The project began from a fairly simple idea: computers do not become useless because the industry has decided that they are old, and the Internet does not have to consist entirely of large platforms, JavaScript-heavy websites, telemetry & tracking, cloud services, and disposable software.

There is still value in small systems, simple protocols, independent servers, and software that can be understood by the people who use it. This is particularly important in this era where cloud computing and LLMs are dominating the World Wide Web.

So what is Cryogenix?

Cryogenix is both a collection of projects and an experimental network, with this community hub being the focal point. There is no clear roadmap, we evolve organically - so you may find a lot of what's here is a work in progress.

This is a playground where every member has a say in the direction and features.

CGX Network

A major part of it is CGX, a private and community-oriented overlay network connecting machines and services across different sites and operating systems - inspired by my time with anoNet, and similar to dn42

The network is deliberately heterogeneous. You may find systems running FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Linux, illumos, older UNIX and UNIX-like operating systems, as well as experimental operating systems.

The Library

The library was our initial focal-point, a place to share knowledge and results of experimentation. Intentionally basic, with no JavaScript, ads, videos, or anything else untoward.

The Forum

The forum, like the rest of this community hub, is a re-implementation of CyberArmy's Dinah backend (which was originally written using mod_perl 1.x!). The unique forum mechanics and style came from the Mr Fong Device by TheGame by The Game, a fork of Matt's wwwboard.

This, along with IRC, is the best place to connect with Cryogenix and get support - as well as request access to the VPN, File server, or Repos.

Sered

Web challenges that evolved from the original Zebulun, Sered came later and had a separate ranking system; for Cryogenix we have integrated it into the traditional rank structure. If you want to make it to Trooper from Recruit, begin your journey here.
